Entrant / Student's Checklist

December
  • Along with the Science Fair coordinator at your school, make the decision to do a science fair project.

  • Review all of the information on the Project Tips page for advice on how to do a good science fair project.

  • If you are going to work with humans or animals in any way, review the Guidelines for Use of Human Subjects and Animals and file an Ethics and Due Care Form before you start your project.  This form must be sent to the Ethics and Safety Committee Chairperson (address, fax, e-mail address are on the form).

  • If you are going to use human subjects in your project you must have each human subject fill out the Informed Consent Form. These forms should become part of your log book.

  • Gather as much background information on your science project from libraries, web sites etc.

  • Begin keeping a log book of your activities and/or experiments (judges will ask to see your log book).

  • Make sure that you have read all the Entry Rules and Safety Regulations given to you by your Coordinator and ensure that your project complies with all of them.

December – February
  • With guidance from your coordinator and parents, complete your project, again referring to the Project Tips page for good ideas on how to do a good science fair project.

  • Make sure your parents see and read copies of all the Rules, Instructions and Regulations that are given to you by your School Coordinator.

  • If you are doing actual physical experiments for your study, make sure you start them early enough so that you can complete your project by mid February.

  • When your project is complete, design your backboard display using the newsletter suggestions in the section on “Presentations”.

  • Make sure your backboard is within the size restrictions listed in the Entry Rules (also review Backboards/Tri-folds for more details).

  • Do a final safety check to make sure you have followed all the Entry Rules and Safety Regulations that apply to the Fair.

February 10, 2010 - Completed Registration Forms Due
  • Completed Student/Project Registration Forms (available from your School Coordinator) are due if you have been chosen to enter the CYSF.

  • Make sure that your Student/Project Registration Form is filled out correctly and is signed by you, your parent(s) and your School Coordinator and is returned to the School Coordinator on time.

February 10 to March 17, 2010
  • Complete and/or put final touches on your backboard display.

  • Again, review the Project Tips page for advice and information on how to do a good science fair project.

March 17, 2010 - Student/Project Check-in and Set-up Day
  • Your School Coordinator will give you a Student/Project Check-in Form with two labels
attached and a Safety Check List.  You need to bring both of these to Check-in and Set-up
Day on April. You cannot register without them.

  • Make sure you have transportation to and from the Stampede Grounds. Normally this will
be your parents or someone your parents have made arrangements with.

  • Make sure you also have your project with you and materials, tools, etc., that you need to
    set it up.

March 19, 2010 - Judging Day
  • Make sure you arrive on time! You will receive a schedule.

  • Make sure you have your log book available for judges to view.

  • Bring a book to read, homework, game, etc., to pass the time when you are not being judged. This would be a good time, as well, to write your thank you letter to one of our sponsors.

March 20, 2010 - Public Viewing and Award Ceremony
  • Make sure you arrive on time! You will receive a schedule.

  • Please stay for the whole morning as we need everyone present for the public viewing and the Awards Ceremony.

  • Good luck and we hope you have enjoyed the Calgary Youth Science Fair
