Seven top students and their science fair projects from the Calgary Youth Science Fair (CYSF) are bringing home seven medals and $43,000 in university scholarships from the Canada-Wide Science Fair held at University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB, May 11-18, 2019.

Katrina Watson, delegate at the Canada-Wide Science Fair and incoming president of the CYSF Society was thrilled with the outcome: “Team Calgary, and all of the participants at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, demonstrate amazing understanding of their areas of study and have a huge passion for exploring the world through science, technology, engineering and math.”

The weeklong Canada-Wide Science Fair typically attracts more than 10,000 visitors, who attend to view top projects developed by some 500 students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). These students represent 25,000 students who competed in over 100 regional science fairs across Canada. Here is a snapshot of this year’s winners from Calgary:

  • Youth Can Innovate Award ($8,000): Ray Shounak, Webber Academy for his project “A Predictive Diagnosis for Parkinson’s Disease Through Machine Learning”. Ray won two awards totalling $8,000. Details on the award can be found at youthcaninnovate.ca.
  • Ted Rogers Innovation Awards ($2,000): Crystal Radinski (Rundle College Senior High), Ray Shounak (Webber Academy)
  • Gold Medal for Excellence Award: Sophie Hoye Pacholek of Henry Wise Wood High School for her project: “From Sea and Sky: Biomimetic Wings for Enhanced Aircraft Performance”
  • Silver Medal for Excellence Award: Monica Aida Lopez (Westmount Charter School), Raphael Kelly (Fairview Junior High School), Davin Martin (Branton Junior High), Jesse Lee (Western Canada Senior High School), Ray Shounak (Webber Academy)
  • Bronze Medal for Excellence Award: Crystal Radinski (Rundle College Senior High)
