It was a very busy year for the CYSFS Board of Directors and Members, with work that started well before the 2016 Fair. This years’ Fair was held at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval on April 13-16. We hosted over 900 students representing over 700 projects. 550 volunteer judges descended on the Oval bright and early Friday morning along with dozens of other volunteers helping to keep us on track and the students engaged.
At a time of economic uncertainty in Calgary, we, like many other agencies in the City, were required to work within a diminished budget. Along with our loyal sponsors and funders we worked above and beyond to meet our benchmark of an exceptional science experience for our students. And although this year may be no better, we are committed to doing it again next year.
The Canada Wide Science Fair 2016 was held in Montreal this year, and twelve finalists from our Fair participated in the weeklong event. Team Calgary brought home 4 gold medals, 4 silver medals, 3 bronze medals, 24 scholarships and 6 awards (including Best Junior Project). I had the pleasure of accompanying the students and took great delight in seeing them bond with other bright young scientists from across Canada.
Thank you, Directors and Members, for all the commitment and energy you demonstrated this year.
